Employment Fluctuations with Equilibrium Wage Stickiness
نویسنده
چکیده
Following a recession, the aggregate labor market is slack–employment remains below normal and recruiting efforts of employers, as measured by help-wanted advertising and vacancies, are low. A model of matching friction explains the qualitative responses of the labor market to adverse shocks, but requires implausibly large shocks to account for the magnitude of observed fluctuations. The incorporation of wage stickiness vastly increases the sensitivity of the model to driving forces. I develop a new model of the way that wage stickiness affects unemployment. The stickiness arises in an economic equilibrium and satisfies the condition that no worker-employer pair has an unexploited opportunity for mutual improvement. Sticky wages neither interfere with the efficient formation of employment matches nor cause inefficient job loss. Thus the model provides an answer to the fundamental criticism previously directed at sticky-wage models of fluctuations. (JEL E24, E32, J64)

متن کاملNew Keynesian perspectives on labor market dynamics
We find that demand shocks play an important role for business-cycle fluctuations in unemployment and job vacancies. The reason is that those shocks give a strong incentive to demand-constrained firms to adjust production and thereby labor input. Furthermore we argue that whether real wage rigidity à la Hall [2005. Employment fluctuations with equilibrium wage stickiness. American Economic Revi...
متن کاملEstimating a Search and Matching Model with Sticky Price and Staggered Wage Negotiation
This paper estimates a search and matching model of the aggregate labor market with sticky price and staggered wage negotiation. It starts with a partial equilibrium search and matching model and expands into a general equilibrium model with sticky price and staggered wage. I study the quantitative implications of the model. The results show that (1) the price stickiness and staggered wage are ...
متن کاملThe Macroeconomic Effects of the Wage Gap between Regular and Non-Regular Employment and Minimum Wages
We analyze the effect of the wage gap between regular and non-regular employment on a macroeconomy by using a Keynesian dynamic model. If the steady state equilibrium exhibits the stagnationist regime, the size of the reserve army effect affects the stability of the equilibrium. On the other hand, if the steady state equilibrium exhibits the exhilarationist regime, an increase in the wage gap d...
متن کاملThe Labor Market and Macro Volatility: A Nonstationary General-Equilibrium Analysis
The evolution of the aggregate labor market is far from smooth. I investigate the success of a macro model in replicating the observed levels of volatility of unemployment and other key variables. I take variations in productivity growth and in exogenous product demand (government purchases plus net exports) as the primary exogenous sources of fluctuations. The macro model embodies new ideas ab...
